FEEDBACK FROM STAKEHOLDERSDentists"I had always been a little hesitant to accept young children as patients. The ABCD training program gave me new insight into management, patient education, and treatment of all children, especially the very young. Armed with this training, I've seen more children of all ages (private and DSHS) and feel the concept of early intervention is a paradigm shift that bodes well for the future dental health of all these young patients." "The ABCD program has kept our office busy by referring us punctual patients who appreciate a private office that will take Medicaid coupons. Billing is simple and reimbursement is in a timely manner. Reimbursement is very similar to a private insured individual."
"Early intervention is what I'm excited about. I'm tired of seeing kids at 4 years old with lots of decay." "It's been very gratifying to see improvement in the oral health of my ABCD clients when they come back for recalls. The families really do want to help their children do better." Clients"My family can't afford health insurance, but through Medicaid and the Access to Baby & Child Dentistry program, my son and daughter have been able to get their teeth taken care of by Dr. Buehler. He's helped them understand what happens if they don't take care of their teeth. He's also taught me a lot about how to help take care of their teeth at home. My 5-year-old doesn't have any cavities and my 7-year-old only has two. I can't imagine what their teeth would be like without regular dental care." "I had a hard time finding someone to take [Medicaid] coupons, so [my children] had never seen a dentist. [After visiting the dentist] They loved it, they had the best time. This program gives dentists a little bit extra. It's an awesome program." "ABCD is a really wonderful program and makes regular family dentists accessible to children in low-income families. It's been wonderful because I didn't realize that my 2 yr old son would have problems with his teeth, but he had some decay. The dentist did 'scoop and fill' and now it looks so much better. I'm so happy that we could stop the decay before it became a bigger problem."
Community Advocates"The ABCD Program has enabled the Mason County Children's Dental Coalition to procure dental care for hundreds of children who would not otherwise have been seen. It also served as the driving force behind a successful $216,000 campaign to bring a storefront SmileSavers clinic to Shelton." "Knowing that there are 25 private dentists in our community who are willing to take Medicaid kids makes a real difference. The ABCD dental program is making it possible to make the vision of universal screening for dental disease a reality."
